Minn Kota Ultrex QUEST Review (So Far)

Posted by Randy Sullivan on Apr 29, 2024

The Minn Kota Quest series is Minn Kota's first offering in brushless trolling motor technology.  Being primarily a bass fisherman, the Minn Kota Ultrex Quest is the main motor I have been able to see in action and will be the trolling motor that I can really put a magnifying glass to.

So what are my first impressions of the Ultrex Quest?  Minn Kota has basically taken every good aspect of a regular Ultrex and made it better.  Every trolling motor on the market has its strengths and the ultrex is no different.

The Ultrex Quest has an upgraded mount; built sturdier and with improved lift assist.  The improved lift assist is something I find very nice.  The struggle of lifting the trolling motor has been made much easier, especially if there is additional equipment, such as a MEGA 360 or free standing forward facing sonar mount.  Not only is the mount easier to lift, it comes with the ability to choose the stow position of the trolling motor.  For a guy who likes to move a lot, an automatic stowing trolling motor is a major convenience.  With the ONE BOAT NETWORK, an Ultrex Quest owner can simply choose which direction the trolling motor needs to stow (mostly based on the position of a forward facing sonar transducer) and it will put itself in that position upon stowing.

The steering motor has also seen an upgrade.  It is now quieter and I find that it is much less jerky when trying to make small directional adjustments.  When trying to make casts to fish using FFS, this is another big upside to the Ultrex Quest.

Apart from the general approvements on the original Ultrex, the new brushless motor is a welcome addition.  It is definitely much quieter, has additional thrust (meaning more), and is supposedly more energy efficient.  I only say supposedly in this case because this is an aspect I have yet to test myself.

As far as the durability of the brushless motor is concerned, I cannot comment on myself.  Being new, we have yet to see any make it in for repairs.  I am, however, confident that the Quest is an improvement over the original Ultrex and should be able to take a beating just as well, if not much better.

Is the Ultrex Quest worth the money?  I think that fully depends on the user.  Is the Quest better than a regular Ultrex? Yes.  If you are a hardcore tournament angler it is certainly a fine upgrade to your boat. We offer all variants of the Ultrex Quest her at Brushy Creek Marine as well as some Battery Bundles featuring the Ultrex Quest.
